Here is the first of our new pages on Linux, the up and coming operating system
With the release of S.U.S.E Linux 6.0
The installation of linux on a home system is now a lot easier. As I write i have just started to use Linux and have installed it around five times up to now, I bought the above package from PC World would you believe, and started by creating some space on a hard drive that I use for testing things on, this doesn't mean that you risk your PC installing it, If you use "Partition Magic" by power quest to make the space available (Available from Nemesis for £39.95 or less) your Windows95/98 installation will be fine and won't even know that linux is there.
One thing I should point out here is that the boot partition that the install routine creates must be on or start on the first 2gb of your hard drive or else it won't work, don't ask why it just does, that's the way the FAT works (File Allocation table).
So you've got your free space, about 750mb should do for a standard installation, and your ready to go.
Put the boot floppy in and your Linux CD rom in the drive and turn on your machine (If your Bios will boot from CD then you can do that) the boot sequence should start, the SUSE flavour of linux install will do everything you want, you just answer yes to all the default questions.
When it asks you where you want to boot from and weather you want lido to to create a boot menu say no for the time being and elect to create a boot disk. This way when you want to boot into Linux you just reset the machine with the boot disk in the floppy and you don't risk making you Windows98 system unusable by modifying the boot sector of your hard drive.
When everything is finished the machine will reset and start Linux for the first time and you will be left at the command prompt Logon:
Just type Root and the password you have set up in the installation
You now have a working Linux machine.
To get a GUI (Graphical User Interface) like windows has you first have to configure you video card, mouse and monitor. To do this type Sax and the config program will start, just move through the screens and adjust the settings, elect 1024 x 768 and 16bit colour this seems to always work and after that you will be back at a command prompt Root@blarblar:
You can start any Window Manager from here but a good place to start is KDE so type: Startx KDE and the new KDE desktop will fire up and there you are LINUX.
Next visit some of the linx to the right and start reading about linux before you waste hours scratching your head.

This is one of many Themes of Linux Window Manager called Enlightenment which we will be covering in depth install instruction in the future weeks
