First, we and several other PC Pro contributing editors got placed on to a junk mailing list and ended up with inboxes full of rubbish. We’ve also had to deal with two cases of fake emails. Unsolicited commercial email – UCE for short, spam for too long is one of the big bug-bears for most Internet users. Back in time Get the latest IT news Listen to live TechTV radio here Computer News Meet Robo-Man, Aibo's New Master Sony, the Japanese consumer electronics giant, has developed a human-like robot that can walk -- or kick -- its popular Aibo robot dog. This week, Sony unveiled the man-like robot, code-named SDR-3X (Sony Dream Robot 3.) The robot has 24 joints, enabling it to perform basic movements such as getting up, walking, changing direction, balancing on one leg, dancing, or kicking. The robot is 19.7 inches tall and weighs 11 pounds. SDR-3 represents two important technology breakthroughs, says Toshitada Doi, a corporate executive vice president at Sony, and head of the company's Digital Creatures Laboratory. The first is the development of an actuator that combines a motor, gearbox, and associated circuitry into a small package. Such actuators are used in the joints of the robot's "body." The second technology leap is the robot's synchronized body movement. The SDR-3 can move the upper half of its body in sync with the lower half to maintain balance. 'The first decade of the 21st century will be dominated by robots' -- Toshitada Dai, Corporate Executive Vice President, Sony Through two microphones in its ear, the robot can recognize about 20 prerecorded words, and can move on command, Sony said. The robot also can distinguish specific colors via a charge-coupled camera mounted in its head. Robo-Man can also respond to commands. It can pick out a specifically colored ball and kick it toward a goal net, Sony said. Presumably, it can do the same thing with the company's Aibo robot dog. Sony began selling a second-generation model of Aibo last week for $1,366, down from $2,276 for the original version. Sony has not decided yet when it will begin selling the humanoid robot, or for how much, a company spokeswoman said. But Sony has said that robotics will form a major part of its entertainment offerings in the 21st century. "The 1990s was the era of the PC and the Internet," Sony's Dai said earlier this month. "The first decade of the 21st century will be dominated by robots." The SDR-3X will be displayed at Robodex 2000, the world's first exhibition of "Robots as Partners," from November 24 to November 26 in Yokohama, Japan. Amazon reneges on DVD prices Last last week, bargain hunters gleefully placed orders for drastically discounted DVD movies and boxed sets at Amazon.com, but were soon embittered when the company informed them that the prices resulted from a "glitch" and that it would therefore require them to pay the higher, regular price or cancel their orders. more PlayStation 2 just about to sell out The UK's allocation of PlayStation 2s has almost gone - just not quite as fast as high street retailers expected. A complete sell out was anticipated for the weekend, but as of 3pm BST this afternoon Dixons' PS2 pre-order hotline still claimed to have 100 units left to allocate. more One copy of Windows for 200 PCs? No wonder Microsoft is keen to do something about UK schools ripping them off, if the experience of one Register reader is typical of what goes on. The software giant is sending a guide to software theft to every head teacher in a bid to educate them on the issues involved. more Intel promises better 1GHz Pentium III supply Chip giant Intel is denying rumours that it is running into problems with supplying the latest flip chip Pentium III because it is using the same stepping as the withdrawn 1.1GHz Pentium III. Resellers and distributors have reported scarcity of the parts for the last three weeks, while posts on Silicon Investor suggest it may be using the same stepping as the 1.1GHz Pentium III, which is C0. However, Intel notified its resellers at the end of last week that availability was improving more Warner to detail digital music service today The last of the world's 'big five' recording companies to unveil a digital music distribution service, Warner Music, will do just that later today, according to 'leaks' to the major news media. The Warner service follows the pattern laid down by EMI, Sony, Universal and BMG: a heap of albums and singles will be offered via the Internet, and sold through existing online e-tailers, the digital channel mirroring the high street bricks'n'mortar one. more |
