Whistler is tentatively slated to ship in March 2001, according to internal Microsoft documents. Microsoft won't comment on where Whistler is in the development process. But sources close to the company say the latest "stable" internal developers build is numbered 2207.

The most recent internal test build is 2214, sources add. A Microsoft spokesman said the company was investigating reports of pirated Whistler builds, but would make no further comment. Looks like Win2000 -- so far As noted by ActiveWin, the pirated Whistler build looks almost identical to Windows 2000 Professional. "A number of people who installed the leaked build stated there were a few HTML enhancements to folders, simplifying things for novice users," ActiveWin reported. "For example, the control panel is now by default an HTML interface, offering access to a few basic configuration options." One change under the hood, according to ActiveWin, is the inclusion of the MarsCore.DLL file. "Mars" is the code name for user interface technology slated to be included in a future version of Microsoft's MSN client.

At one point, Mars was used as the code name for the next version of a consumer-oriented version of Internet Explorer. After signing up Mars beta testers last fall, Microsoft sent out a note telling testers it had delayed the start of the beta because the company was "rethinking some of our most basic assumptions" regarding the future user interfaces. It isn't just in the user interface that Microsoft's been redrawing its Windows roadmap. In January, Microsoft acknowledged that it had tabled work on "Neptune," a consumer version of Windows slated to follow Millennium, and on "Odyssey," an NT-kernel-based follow-on to Windows 2000. Instead, Microsoft said, it planned to merge the Neptune and Odyssey code bases in the form of Whistler. The follow-on to Whistler, code-named Blackcomb, is expected to ship in 2002 or later.

Windows Millennium, the long-awaited next version of the consumer half of Microsoft's OS strategy,
has reached final candidate stage - indicating a release date that could be as early as July or August
this year. Millennium, or Windows Me as it's come to be known, is based on Windows 98 code rather
than the 'bullet proof' core of Windows 2000, although early reports suggest it is more stable than
its predecessor.

we think about video the way MP3 has for audio -- by making movie-level
video over the Internet and on computers viable with today's bandwidth

both enabler and villain in this multimedia play.

Have you got enough memory ?

This is a reply to a letter asking how adding more memory effects a systems performance.

None that I would recommend.  But our general consensus is that the
curve of benefit starts steep, begins to slow from 48M to 64 (which is
often enough if you don't run big graphics or the like), less so to
128 and marginal thereafter (except again for big graphics).

Best thing is to monitor in *your* typical workload with System
Monitor (install from Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup, System
Tools, check it in 'Details') and in its Edit - Add - Memory
management include 'Swap File in Use'
If that - in normal working - is showing 20MB or so, a step in RAM
would help: if it is half the next sensible size step in RAM then the
improvement should be marked.  If on the other hand it is 10MB or less
(Windows is inclined to 'park' a small amount without actually
swapping from it) then save your money.

Windows2000

I have been running the release version of Windows2000 for 3 weeks now and have not had any problems, Apart from a few drivers. Mainly scanners which seem to be the most difficult to write for some reason.

Windows CE & Windows2000

Lots of you have been asking about connecting your Windows CE devices to Windows 2k, well having scoured the Microsoft website and spoken to various manufacturers to no avail I had to ring MS themselves.

They report that as of this time as long as you are running Active Sync 3.0 you should not have any problems.

So I did try to install the WindowsCE CD and it failed miserably at the first hurdle, with setup reporting an error so, back in its box it went along with the OEM license. I had downloaded Active Sync 3.0 a while ago but it wasn't very user friendly running with Windows98 but 2mins later after a 2 click install my Palm PC was synchronized and working with up to date data.

Viva Microsoft!!!

Corel Linux

Corel Linux was given away on a magazine disc this month and I was most impressed, finally a Linux operating system that will work straight out on the box (or mag). You must get yourself a second Hard drive or a copy of Partition Magic though to ensure you don't trash your existing operating system.

Once you have at least 1gb free space or a clean hard disc you put in the disc select boot from CD rom in the bios and your away. 10 mins later you have a fully functioning linux box (complete with Samba web server)

My only gripe is the lack on Coreldraw for Linux included in the distribution so you are left with just surfing the internet and emailing. Although there are lots of themes and The Gimp to play with. Ring me if you fancy a copy!!
